In 2011, I was hired to design some marketing material for a candidate in the UNM GPSA (Graduate and Professional Student Association) Presidential Election. The challenge was to create a cohesive theme that incorporated as many ideals of the campaign into eye-catching designs, and to do it as inexpensive as possible. Additionally, as per the rules of the election, money was not allowed to be spent on printing.

To combat this, I designed a black and white color scheme that could be printed from any of the free printing centers on the UNM campus. Students were not familiar with many of the candidates either, so the goal of the designs was to be as informative as possible, while providing a strong name association. The candidate’s name was put at the forefront of every design which revolved around typography (type design).

The designs included small 1/4 page “bookmarks” that would be folded almost in half, a full page pamphlet that resembled the bookmarks, and a full page flyer. Each design incorporated the campaign slogan “Open, Inclusive, Accountable” into the design, not just for aesthetics but also for action as students were encouraged to “Open” the pamphlets and bookmarks to learn more about the candidate.
